FLY FISHING ARGENTINA
Argentina is South America's second largest country after Brazil. Settled in the early 1800s by Spaniards, followed by Italians, Germans and English immigrants later in the century, it has a truly European ambiance. Its climate varies from steamy jungles in the north to frozen glaciers in the south. Flat pampas lie between the Atlantic coast in the east and the high Andes Mountains towering in the west. Independent from Spain since 1816, Argentina has been a democracy since 1983. It has a very high standard of living, 97% literacy and is as safe to travel in as the U.S., Canada or Europe. Exquisite Buenos Aires, Argentina's capital, is the most European city in the Americas containing 13 million of Argentina's 39 million inhabitants. With majestic boulevards, busy cafes, and gleaming statuary, Buenos Aires is rich in culture and offers wonderful restaurants, fine hotels and great value for shopping. It is definitely worth a short visit particularly for first-time visitors. In addition to chic Buenos Aires, Argentina is well known as a sportsman's paradise. Great estancias, Argentine ranches, offer some of the finest trout fishing in the Americas. It is our pleasure to present what we feel is the best of the best.
Patagonia Fly Fishing
Fly fishing for resident brown, rainbow and brook trout, not to be confused with sea-run brown trout, is concentrated in the region around Junin de los Andes, San Martin de los Andes, San Carlos de Bariloche and Esquel. There are daily commercial flights of 2-3 hours in duration from Buenos Aires to airports located in San Martin and Bariloche. Several times a week there are commercial flights from Buenos Aires to Esquel farther to the south. For the most part lodges in this area fish "private" water (rivers stretches on estancia or lodge property). Typical lodge stays are 3-5 days in duration so as to avoid fishing the same water more than once. Hence, in a 7-10 day visit to the region, we recommend combining stays at 2-3 lodges. All your trout gear from home will work in Patagonia: 3wt-5wt rods for delicate dry fly presentations, 6 wt or 7wt rods for big streamers and Patagonia’s famous wind; floating lines are used for the most though taking along sinking tips is recommended; typical American West fly patterns are perfect (detailed gear lists are provided for those booking trips). Lodge stays in Argentine Patagonia can be combined with stays at lodges in Chilean Patagonia by driving across the Argentina-Chile frontier or by taking the unique and scenic Lake Crossing of the Andes, a full-day, well-organized trip using a combination of 3 passenger boats and 3 bus portages between Bariloche, Argentina and Puerto Varas, Chile. Similarly other points of interest, the world-famous Iguazu Falls in the north, the mammoth Perito Moreno Glacier in the south or the splendid wineries around Mendoza can be included in any itinerary.
